Health Matters, Herbs & More...
is owned by Maurine Sharp, a registered nurse and natural health practitioner with over 37 years experience.
Having grown and used herbs and quality food for the past 15 years for herself and her family, she has discovered amazing results. Guided by her experience and these changes, she became determined to open her own organic health food market in downtown Monroe. As part of its mission, Health Matters supports local businesses and farmers by stocking many local products. Maurine is also the local head of the Weston A. Price Foundation. She also carries copies of books that follow the doctrine and diet suggested by the foundation.

Health values we stand for:
- 1 Ditch All Hydrogenated Oils: Hydrogenated Oils (Trans-fats, partially hydrogenated...) are highly processed using toxic chemicals and high temps, causing the seeds or beans to lose almost all of their nutritional value and the oils to turn rancid. Natural fats (butter, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, and coconut oil) are rich in nutrients and minerals and help vitamins absorb into the body.
- 2 Dump All Commercial Dairy: Commercial dairy cows are keep in confinement, they are fed genetically engineered(GMO) grains which reduce the vitamin content in the milk and contain pesticides, and they are given hormones(rBST) and antibiotics that can affect the consumer. Also pasteurizing dairy products destroys enzymes and beneficial bacteria. We carry Guernsey Dairy milk which is raised without rBST and Calder's dairy natural milk which still contains the cream and is better absorbed by the body. Call or email for more info on raw milk co-op.
- 3 Kick the Caffeine Habit: Caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands causing fatigue, lack of physical endurance and stamina, depressed immune system, allergic reactions, weight gain, low blood pressure, and dizziness. Caffeine also stimulates the liver to release more sugar into the blood stream and impairs calcium absorption; this is a major concern for children whose bones are still developing. What should you drink? Water, the most important fluid, specialists recommend 1/2 your body weight in ounces. Try filtered water, it has less chemicals.
- 4 Lose the Table Salt: Table salt is sodium chloride that has been processed at high temperatures, which changes the molecular structure and removes vital minerals. It also contains additives and anti-caking agents. Excess consumption is associated with high blood pressure, fluid retention, and heart and kidney disease. The best way to balance minerals (including sodium) is to use Celtic Sea Salt. It contains 80 vital minerals which help maintain fluid balance, normalize blood pressure, enhance digestion and nourish the adrenal glands.
- 5 Pitch your refined sugars and artificial sweeteners: The average person consumes 154 lbs of sugar per year, contributing to hypoglycemia, diabetes, syndrome X and depression. Artificial sweeteners have been linked to cancer, weight gain, impaired coordination and decreased mental function. We carry natural alternatives like Stevia, Xylitol, Grade B maple syrup, raw honey and natural cane sugars.
- 6 Toss Out All White Flour: White flour breaks down in the body just like sugar. And because of the hybridization of wheat in the 1950's, which increased the gluten content, gluten intolerance is on the rise. We carry a large line of gluten and wheat free products.
